What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound is one of the oldest TRIO Programs; it is a highly successful college based program of student-centered academic instruction, individual tutoring and counseling for low-income students or students whose parents did not complete a post-secondary education.

Upward Bound is a pre-college enrichment program designed to provide counseling and an individual educational plan that will enable students to make a successful transition from high school to college. The Upward Bound Program also provides tutoring, academic academies, cultural activities; college tours opportunities and encouragement that enable the student to make the transition to a post-secondary institution successfully.

The Coffeeville Calhoun Upward Bound Program serves at least 50 students in Coffeeville and Calhoun County School Districts.

History of Upward Bound

In 1965, Congress established this program as a way to assist low-income youths acquirethe resources necessary to graduate from high school and get accepted to college. By establishing this program there was hope that the cycle of poverty would be broken byeducating one student at a time.
